Tom Axford (1894-1983) won the Victoria Cross, the most prestigious award for conspicuous bravery, on the 4th July 1918, for his heroic deeds in the Battle of Hamel in France in World War 1.
This story recounts Tom's life from his boyhood growing up in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, to his enlistment and service in World War 1, through to his life and times after the war as a family man and civilian. Due to him having been awarded the Victoria Cross, Tom was often featured in the media, wherein he appeared as a colourful character. He was on many occasions invited to be a special guest at significant events that shaped Australia's history, such as the opening of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
A Life Remembered details Tom's actions that won him the Victoria Cross, but also recounts the life of a 'humble hero'.
